A few weeks back we unveiled the results of our community survey that explored our complex relationships with our bodies [tldr: most of us don’t feel great about them and we think about them a lot].
We have additional surveys in the works that explore the various factors that contribute to these sentiments—such as sources of shame and society’s narrow definition of sexual attractiveness.
We want to change that and are offering an alternative way to exist in our bodies—a concept called body neutrality. In this introductory blog, we’ll provide a foundation of understanding, covering what body neutrality entails, how it differs from the commonly discussed body positivity movement, and how we embrace body neutrality within the Natural Pursuits community.
Accompanying this piece will be never-before-seen photography by Ramuel Galarza taken at the February 2022 Natural Pursuits event.

WHAT IS BODY NEUTRALITY
Body neutrality encourages us to change how we think about our bodies. Instead of judging them based on looks, we shift to focussing on their value and appreciate their natural functions. The theory is based on the concept that our bodies are not objects meant for judgment, but tools that help us live our lives to the fullest. Instead of spending mental space thinking positively or negatively about your body, you give yourself the space to live your life.
Acceptance is a huge part of body neutrality. You accept your body as it is and concentrate on the things your body does for you.
HOW IS IT DIFFERENT THAN BODY POSITIVITY
The two concepts are incredibly different. While body positivity encourages embracing and celebrating all body types, body neutrality emphasizes neutrality rather than unconditional love. With body neutrality, we aim to take a neutral stance toward our bodies, acknowledging them without overly judging or attaching value to them. It frees us from feeling pressured to have an opinion on how we look.
Cultivating body positivity requires constant focus on our bodies. It promotes the idea of unconditional love for your body, which is sounds amazing. But, in reality, there may be parts of our bodies that we never love, leaving us feeling guilty for not fully embracing our physical selves.
Body neutrality, on the other hand, offers the chance to stop thinking about our bodies all the time and removes the pressure to love every inch of ourselves. It doesn’t require us to make value judgments or force ourselves into a state of unconditional adoration. Instead, it encourages a more balanced perspective that acknowledges the complexity of our feelings towards our bodies, while prioritizing self-acceptance.
In embracing body neutrality, we shift our attention from scrutinizing every imperfection to appreciating what our bodies allow us to experience and achieve. It’s an invitation to let go of the constant mental chatter surrounding our appearance and redirect that energy elsewhere. By adopting this approach, we create space for a more balanced and compassionate relationship with our bodies, free from the pressure to constantly seek validation and unwavering self-love. With body neutrality we can acknowledge our insecurities while nurturing an environment of acceptance and kindness towards ourselves and others.
Body positivity means changing your opinion on your body. Body neutrality is more about saying who gives a fuck about your appearance and, instead, thinking body as a vessel for fulfillment.

THE POWER OF BODY NEUTRALITY
Considering the survey results revealing the prevalence of negative emotions about our body image, body neutrality offers a potential solution. It allows us the opportunity to break free self-criticism and judgment. Instead, we can cultivate a mindset that prioritizes self-acceptance, self-compassion, and having a little fun. Doesn’t it seem better to go through life thinking about what are bodies can do and how we might use them.
I encourage you to take a few moments to think about the fun you’ve had in your body—enjoying meals, laughing until your stomach hurts, hugging loved ones, dancing to your favorite song, fucking.
NATURAL PURSUITS AND BODY NEUTRALITY
Body Neutrality has secretly been a part of Natural Pursuits shoots since the beginning. These events create safe spaces where people can freely express themselves without fear of judgment. Through nudity and artistic collaborations, we explore our bodies in a non-sexualized and accepting environment.
Brainstorming photoshoot ideas, turning genitals into Easter Baskets, and laying in the sun were all exercises in body neutrality, allowing us to appreciate our bodies for the freedom, creativity, and connection they facilitate.
CONCLUSION
The concept of body neutrality offers a path towards self-acceptance and challenging societal expectations of our bodies. By adopting a neutral perspective, we can break free from the constraints of appearance-based judgments and develop a kinder relationship with ourselves and others.
It is important to recognize that societal pressures greatly influence our ability to fully enjoy and appreciate our bodies. Dating or hooking up can be challenging due to the judgments and stereotypes imposed by others. The gym can be unwelcoming if we don’t fit into preconceived notions of what is considered “fit.” Hurtful comments from loved ones still affect our we see ourselves.
While these challenges persist, we believe learning more about body neutrality is worthwhile. In future blogs we’ll discuss practical techniques for cultivating body neutrality, share personal stories, and learn ways to navigate the complexities of body image in today’s world. Let’s change the way we think about our bodies, together.
