Artist Interview
Natural Pursuits (NP): What is your relationship to casual nudity?
Avery Alejandro (AA):New York City is one of the greatest cities in the world and in this great city, you could find whatever you are looking for.
After my last relationship I met a nudist and he introduced me to the nude community. I found a tribe of people that I instantly connected with and whole-heartily supported.
NP: What were your impressions of the day?
AA: This specific photoshoot was during pride month, which we all know is basically a month-long party. I went out the night before and didn’t get home until dawn. With only 4 hours of sleep I crossed the east river, nursed a mild hangover, and was determined to create beautiful photographs of a tribe that was familiar, yet I was estranged from it due to the pandemic.
NP: How did the place, people, and vibe of the party affect how you shot the event?
AA: I walked in and was greeted with good energy, smiles, and nude bodies. I’m a firm believer in energy and vibes. This gathering radiated good vibes and energy, which helped produce these intimate portraits.
NP: Can you talk about the differences between shooting with film and shooting digital?
AA: I find that film photography forces me to slow down, utilize my artistic toolbox, and really look at what I’m trying to photograph. I create my photographs through analog photography and it’s slow, intimate, and best represents the way I see the world. not a film snob, just prefer this form of art making vs. the instant gratification of digital photography.
NP: Anything else you want to mention or promote?
AA: Kindness. Let’s all be a little more understanding and kind to each other.
